CHESS CLUB
The grade twos will be bringing home a permission slip this week for Chess Club. Each year, the grade two students learn how to play chess during math class and have I have them join chess club. They need to play a number of games in order to learn the basics. The interested students from grade two and up meet during lunch recess on Mondays in the chapel area to play chess. We meet each week during the months of February and March. We also have a mini-tournament before Spring Break which they can enter if they wish or keep playing for fun and practice. Please sign the permission slip and return it to school before our first chess club day – Monday, February 4. If your child is in grade one and already knows how to play chess (and is interested in joining chess club), please speak to me.
WEST COAST ABORIGINAL PEOPLE
We are continuing our study about the West Coast Aboriginal people of Canada. We have made canoes, totem poles and ceremonial masks. We’ve learned about the importance of the red cedar tree. This week we will be talking about some of the inventions and contributions Canada’s aboriginal people made, which are still used today.
MATH
Both grades began a new math unit last week on Addition and Subtraction. Having your child solve real life word problems and deciding what operation they need to use (either addition or subtraction), would be beneficial practice for your child at home. Example – I have 6 eggs and I need 10 to make a breakfast omelet, how many more eggs do I need? Keep it fun!

SOCIAL
STUDIES
We
have started our new social studies unit about the Northwest Coast Aboriginal
People of Canada. If you have any books
or artifacts at your house that you would be willing to share with us, please
send them to school. Last week we
started by making a chart about what we think we already know about these
people. We made our own mini-canoes and started
comparing their lives in the past to our lives today.
*PLEASE
send an empty paper towel roll (or 2) to school this week.
MTYP
Last
week I sent home a permission slip regarding our next field trip to the
MTYP. This trip is on Wednesday, January
23 in the afternoon. The play is called The Big League. Please sign the form and return it to school
A.S.A.P. If you are able to drive and
chaperone, please fill out that portion of the form. Thank you.
GRADE ONE SPELLING The grade ones had their first spelling test on Friday. They all did an excellent job!

HAPPY
NEW YEAR! 2013
THANK
YOU Thank
you so much for the Christmas gifts that I received from you and your children. They were thoughtful, beautiful, delicious,
and very much appreciated. I hope all of
you had a restful holiday.
GRADE
ONE SPELLING HOMEWORK
The
grade one students are all finished the math bag games that they were taking
home before Christmas. Starting this
week, they will be bringing home some spelling homework. There are 4 pages of work that will help them
practice their spelling list words. The
homework will come home on Monday and is due back at school on Friday. Some children might need help understanding
the directions at first. Please check
through the homework package and make sure it is complete (you do not have to
correct it), then initial the bottom of this newsletter and have your child
bring the whole package back to school. You
may want to practice the spelling words with your child during the week. The spelling tests will be on Friday. Let me know how the homework is going.
CHRISTMAS
HAMPERS
Thank
you too, for helping our class make a Christmas Hamper for one Cheer Board family
in Winnipeg. My husband and I delivered
the hamper on the Saturday before Christmas and the family was very happy and
grateful. They wanted us to express
their gratitude to our students and their families.
LEARNING
and LIVING KITS
During the month of January,
we are collecting one small, simple toy (new, that does not require batteries)
for our Learning and Living Kits that we are putting together for CLWR
(Canadian Lutheran World Relief).
