FIELD TRIP
I e-mailed all of you with the last minute information regarding a field trip to the zoo on Thursday, May 30, in the afternoon. (There was a cancellation, so we were offered the program space.) The program begins at 1:00 and ends at 2:30. We will be eating lunch here at school (we’ll start 15 minutes early) and leave the school at 12:15. We are supposed to use the Roblin Blvd. Entrance. I again apologize for the late notice, but we will need parent volunteer drivers and chaperones. The permission slip will be coming home on Monday and I will need it returned the next day, especially if you are available to drive. Pray for NO RAIN but we will be going regardless of the weather. Thanks again.

BIRD CHALLENGE
Hopefully, you and your child had time over the long weekend to do some bird watching. Please send in the bird tally sheet to school so we can total the number of birds that we saw. Even if you did not add any new tally marks to the list, please return it to school because we can count the birds that we saw as a class on Thursday. Thanks.

NO MORE HOMEWORK
I will not be sending home anymore homework packages for the remainder of the year. Spring Fever has arrived and I know that families are busy with after school and weekend activities. There will not be any more spelling tests either. Please DO keep up with home-reading and grade twos should continue practicing their addition facts.

BUTTERFLY SCIENCE UNIT
Our Flat Stanleys have started to arrive back at school! We will be talking about where they visited as they come in, and find those places on our map. We have also finished most of our Canada unit and will now be starting a mini-unit about butterflies. As we take a look at butterflies, we will be making our own Butterfly ABC Book. We have some baby caterpillars arriving at the end of the month. As we watch them develop, we will be keeping a journal and recording our observations.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY! MAFALDA MAY 15

LONG WEEKEND
We have a very long weekend coming up. This week’s homework is due on Thursday and the spelling tests will be on Thursday as well. Have a wonderful, restful weekend.

FLAT STANLEY PROJECT
Our Flat Stanley people have been sent off in the mail. Hopefully we will start to receive our letters and postcards back in a week or two. We will be posting our flat people and where they visited on a large map of Canada (and the world) along with the postcards that we received.

BIRD CHALLENGE
This week will be going on a short walk around our neighbourhood, looking for common birds. We will be keeping a list and tallying the number of and types of birds that we see. Sometime over this weekend, the children are asked to go on another bird walk around their own neighbourhoods (or cottages) and add on to their bird tallies. We will be sending in our recorded numbers to be compiled with bird counts across the country. I will send more information home with your child on Thursday.

READ-A-THON
Our school is having a Read-a-Thon during the month of May. We are having our “kick-off” on Wednesday after chapel and an envelope with the directions will be coming home with your child then. Thank you.

FLAT STANLEY
We have finished making our “Flat Stanley” people and are getting ready to write our postcards about Winnipeg and mail them off to other cities in Canada and the world. If you do not have anyone to write to, please let me know and I can ask a few relatives of my own to help us out. As well, I do have a couple of extra postcards if you cannot find one, but please let me know that as well. I would like to mail out our letters a.s.a.p. (Tuesday).

CANADA
Last week we made our own Canada puzzles and glued them back together. We have been learning about the provinces and territories and this week will be looking at symbols of Canada.

BUTTERFLIES
We have had 3 chrysalises crack open one at a time in our classroom and watched our Black Swallowtail butterflies emerge. We had a vote and their name was Diamond (all 3 of them). These were caterpillars/chrysalises from last fall that we had kept over the winter. We are now waiting for a class supply of newly hatched Painted Lady caterpillars to arrive, so that we can study the metamorphosis process a little more closely.

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!
To all of our mothers, have a restful and joyful Mother’s Day this weekend.
