ABORIGINAL PEOPLE of the NORTHWEST COAST
We have finished our study about the NW Coast aboriginal people.  We learned about how they lived long ago and a little about the history from the time of the European contact up to today.  We made small totem poles, decorated canoes, designed button blankets, practiced weaving a bookmark and made a group totem pole with our own animal crest designs.  Here are a few pictures of our projects.

MOVIE PARTY
We had lots of fun at our last class movie party.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR
The book fair is now open during the lunch recess time (12:20 to 12:50).  The children may purchase books (and other items) during this time or with their parents during the Evening of the Arts Concert next week Wednesday.

FIELD TRIP
There is another up-coming field trip booked for our class.  This trip is to the Aviation Museum where we will be participating in a program called "Stop and Go".  This program is all about Position and Motion, which is also our next Science unit.  We will be going on Friday, June 3rd in the afternoon.  We will need parents drivers for this field trip so keep this date open if you are able to help us out.

GREEN DAY
On Monday we cleaned up our playground and went for a nature walk.

What's New in One and Two? April 25 - 29, 2016

DESIGN PROCESS
We have finished our design projects for this year.  Our last project was to build a new bridge for the Three Billy Goats Gruff (with no troll).  The bridges needed to be strong enough to hold up the three goats for 10 seconds and reach across a span of 30 cm (longer than the length of one piece of spaghetti).  They could use only white glue and spaghetti and a wooden block at each end.  I am delighted to report that all of the bridges held up!

BABY FIONA
We had a very special guest last week.  It was Finley's new baby sister, Fiona (and mom too).  Finley's mom and I are creating our own version of  the "Roots of Empathy" program which aims to promote empathy in children by watching the growth in a baby and caring about her development.  We read a book about being happy with who you are and wrote down our questions about the baby.  We tried to figured out what she was able to do at 1 month of age and what she could not do yet.  Our plan is to have her visit every 3 weeks or so and watch her grow.  Thank you very much Mrs. Culley and Finley for sharing your time and your baby with our class.

WEST COAST ABORIGINAL PEOPLE
For our final social studies unit we will be studying the aboriginal people from the Northwest Coast of Canada.  Especially taking a look at how they lived long ago and their art.

FIELD TRIP DATE
I have booked a field trip to Oak Hammock Marsh in June (Friday the 24).  It will be an all day trip and we will need drivers and chaperones.  If anyone is interested, I am hoping that this early notification will give parents time to book off of work if needed.  I will let you know about any other planned field trip dates as soon as I know.  Thanks.

What's New in One and Two? April 11- 15, 2016

REMINDERS - Monday is the last day to bring in the Spring Break Easter Egg Reading Sheet

DESIGN PROCESS
We have been working on the design process for science lately.  The students have a Fairy Tale problems to solve.  Last week they needed to design and make a new basket for Little Red Riding-Hood.  They could only use paper and masking tape.  We had certain criteria that they needed to meet - it needed a handle, it needed to be big enough to hold her lunch (juice box, hamburger, orange), and it needed to be strong enough and hold together while it was being carried across the chapel area and back.
Our second project was to design and make a chair for Humpty Dumpty (he was tired of sitting on walls and falling off of them).  This week we will be making a new bridge for the Three Billy Goats Gruff to walk across using only white glue and spaghetti.
Here are some photos of the work in progress and some completed designs from last week -

MATH
The grade ones have been working on measurement in math this week.  We used paper squares to measure and compare the area of our desks and our chairs.
