WEARING VALENTINE COLOURS

FESTIVAL du VOYAGER
We had lots of fun dressing up as Voyagers last Wednesday.  We sang a Voyager song and danced the jig!  We were also able to taste some French Canadian pea soup, bannock, and maple syrup.  (Thank you to Mr. B, Mme Christensen and our class parent bakers)

LAST DRESS-UP DAY FOR "I LOVE TO READ" MONTH
For the final dress-up day this month, the students are invited to dress-up as a storybook character.  It does not need to be an elaborate or fancy costume.  They can just choose a character and create a costume at home.  If they are able, please have them bring the book with them to school that day.  The teachers have a surprise storybook skit to act out after chapel on Wednesday called "The Day the Crayons Came Home".

40 ACTS FOR LENT
During this season of Lent, our school has challenged ourselves to perform 40 acts of generosity.  There is a large, white tree in the front hallway and each class has been posting their acts on the tree.   Some are simple and some are more complicated, some are done by a group and some by individuals, some involve planning and some are spontaneous.  They are all welcome and encouraged and we pray that this idea nourishes "servant hearts" in our students and in our school every day.

OWL VISITORS
Our class was very excited to meet our two owl visitors from the Wildlife Haven last week.  We met Luna, the barn owl and Max, the great horned owl.  The children remembered so many facts about owls and the presenter was very impressed with their knowledge.

CAT FOOD COLLECTION
Thank you so much for your help in collecting canned cat food for the owls at Wildlife Haven.   There is still time to bring in your can if you would like to.  The owls are coming for a visit next Wednesday, February 17 and picking up the cat food at that time.

I LOVE TO READ
Our "I Love to Read" dress-up days started last week with "WEAR WORDS".  We all got to share the words on our shirts and we made a class book with photos to read.

CHESS CLUB
Chess Club started last week for the students in grade 2 and up.  We learned the basics during math class and then the beginner players were paired up with an older child to have a practice game on Thursday.  There were 45 children in the chapel area during lunch recess happily playing chess.

What's New in One and Two? January 25 - 29, 2016

OWL VISITORS COLLECTION
Our class will be having some owl visitors next month (February 17) from the Wildlife Haven Rehabilitation Centre.  They have a list of donation items they need on an ongoing basis.  I was hoping that our class could collect one of these items to give to the visitors when they come out to our school.  The item I was thinking about is canned, wet cat food.  If you and your child would like to donate a can to this project, please send a can of wet cat food to school before their visit (Feb. 17).  I am guessing that rehabilitating owls eat cat food (Who knew?).  Thanks for your help.

JANUARY CHAPEL THEME
The backpack item for this month's chapel is a cellphone (prayer).  We talked about prayer and how we can call on Jesus when we need help.  Our class made a large version of The Lord's Prayer, one word at a time,  which is the prayer that Jesus taught his disciples.  It is hanging up in the chapel area.

READING GROUP - SKIT
One of our reading groups put on a short skit for our class and the Grade 5/6 reading buddies last Wednesday.  It was "The Three Little Pigs" and they did an excellent job.  BRAVO!

LEGO PARTY
We had our Lego Party on Friday.  It was lots of fun and I learned a lot about giving a LEGO Party. (You definitely need to schedule more than one hour.)  We started off with a short Lego video for inspiration.  Then everyone designed and built their own creations.  We took a short walk around the classroom to look at everyone's designs and I took pictures.  Next week we will be doing a "Show and Tell" about these creations.  I think most of the Lego pieces got back to their proper homes.  We also had some Lego-ish snacks.  All in all, I think our first earned class party was a success.
