LAST WEEK
It was a very busy week.
We went to the MTYP to see "Alligator Pie".  Thank you to all of the parents who drove.
Then got a VERY BIG pumpkin delivered to our class and we have been using it for math (measuring, comparing).  Mr. Wozney and Mr. Petkau had to use a cart to move it from my car to the classroom.  (It weighs 180 pounds!)
We started work on our Fall Supper Art projects.  The kids are creating big paintings of ornamental corn using a black glue outline and tempera paint.  We will finish them this week.
We also made paper chain colour patterns and handprint spiders to decorate the room for our party.
We used finger paint to mix primary colours to make secondary colours and glued our "feely" objects into our Touch Booklets.

Meet Ormie and Jewel our pumpkins.

How tall is Ormie the BIG pumpkin?

How many blocks tall is Jewel the small pumpkin?

Measuring how big around are the pumpkins using "links".

Counting how many lines are on each pumpkin.

Does a pumpkin float or sink?

Can you roll a pumpkin?

Thanks again for your help.
In case you can't find the note we need - something smooth, rough, hard, soft, bumpy, crunchy

HALLOWEEN PARTY SNACKS
We will be having our Halloween Party on Monday, October 31 in the afternoon.  I usually divide up parent/families in the class and assign them to bring treats for one class party per year.  This usually works out fairly for everyone.  If your snack party day does not work for you, please let me know and we can switch with another family.
Remember - please do not send food containing "NUTS" to school.  We also have an "EGG" allergy in the class to keep in mind.  If your treat contains eggs, please label those treats.  There are 17 children in our class.  I will bring the drinks.

Learning's Fun ~ In Grade One! October 11, 2016

Reminders - Scholastic Book orders due on Friday, October 14

I hope that your Thanksgiving was restful and delicious!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!               ALYSSA and ISABELLE                 OCTOBER  17

MATH
We have finished up our first math unit about Patterns and are starting unit number two which is all about Number Sense.

SCIENCE
We are continuing our unit about The Five Senses.

HOME-READING
Most of the children should be bringing home small beginner books (A,B,C) to use for home-reading.  Please keep these small books for more than one night and read them over and over again.  There is more to reading than just de-coding the words.  They should also practice reading aloud to develop fluency, expression, rhythm and confidence.  (You can model reading with expression and they can echo-read each page after you.)

They need to see themselves as successful readers.  Ask them to re-tell you the story.  Do they remember what happened?  Can they answer questions?  What happened at the beginning, middle and ending?  Ask "understanding" questions - Why do you think he did that?  Does this story remind you of anything?  How do you think she felt?  What might happen next?  Of course you wouldn't ask everything for every page.  Reading should be enjoyable.

If they are struggling, go back a level or re-read the same books over again or take turns reading until they feel more confident and successful.  Do not encourage them to move up a level too quickly.  Learning to read (with comprehension) takes a lot of practice.  Our class goal is to read 5 nights a week or more.  Some of the children may be bringing home longer, more challenging books, but the same ideas work for them as well.

Reminders - NO SCHOOL Monday, October 10 - Thanksgiving
                    - Please bring in your plastic shopping bags to be recycled.
Put the bags in the bin in the front hall.  The bags will be sent to Take Pride Winnipeg.

HOMEWORK
The math homework is due on Fridays.  Even if the homework was a game, please hand in the sheet (if you have any dice at home, please return them as well).  The weekly Home-Reading Log is also due every Friday.  Your child may switch books on any day that they are ready for something new.  We are working on choosing "good-fit" books.

TASKS FOR TERRY
Thank you for your family's participation with our Tasks for Terry activity.  If your child has not returned their sheet, it is not too late.  They may still bring it in to school.

UP-COMING FIELD TRIP
Just to let you know ahead of time - We will be going to the MTYP (Manitoba Theatre for Young People) on Thursday, October 27 to see the production of ALLIGATOR PIE.  A permission form will be coming home next week if you are interested and available to drive.

TREASURES
We have lots of small, pocket-sized "treasures" on our classroom that we use for math manipulatives. (glass beads, diamonds, stones, cars, coins, beans, poker chips, etc...)  If your child has brought some of these items home accidently, please return them to school.  We need them for counting and sorting in math class.  Thanks.
