Learning's Fun ~ In Grade One! September 20, 2019

Reminders - School Picture day on Wednesday, October 16
                   - NO SCHOOL - Thanksgiving Monday, October 14

HOME-READING
We started home-reading last week.  Please fill out the bottom portion of the reading log, especially with the book level and notes about how they are doing (good fit, easy, hard, etc...).  This helps me out a lot when deciding when a student is ready to move up to a more challenging reading level.  And don't forget to initial the date box for each night of home-reading.  We are collecting number of nights not number of books. Our class goal is to read 5 times each week (or more).  Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.  The children can keep their chosen books for as long as they like and then bring them back any day of the week and choose new books.  There is no set schedule to choose new books because everyone is different and reading different level books.  Re-reading a book on more than one night is a "good" thing.  They will get extra practice with speed, fluency and expression.

BOXTOWN
We have been working on a social studies unit called "I Belong" and talking about what you can find in a community.  Could you please save your recyclable stuff for the next week or so.  We will need it next week when we start building BOXTOWN!  I'll let you know when to send things in.

EVACUATION
We had a practice evacuation last week.  Our whole school walked over to Nordale School (and they walked here).  If there is ever an emergency evacuation, that is where we will be moving to.  Our class did really well - walking, following directions and not talking (much).
