NO SCHOOL on FRIDAY
There is no school this Friday so the homework is due on the Thursday instead (January 30) and the spelling test will be on the Thursday too.

OWLS IN THE FAMILY
I have been reading the chapter book, "Owls in the Family" by Farley Mowat, to the class.  It is a classic Canadian story about a boy who lives in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and when he acquires two great-horned owls as pets, lots of fun and adventures start to happen.  We have been working on imagining "pictures in our minds" about what is happening in the story, as it is being read aloud.

VALENTINE'S DAY
Wow!  January is almost over and Valentine's Day is just around the corner.  The children usually exchange Valentine cards with each other on our party day - Friday, February, 14.  If your child would like to bring Valentine's to school, please send one for every child in the class.

ALL ABOUT OWLS
We have started our new science unit about OWLS this month.  We are learning about the different species of owls that are found in North America and each student will be doing their own research project on one species.  Then they will be sharing what they learned with the whole class.  We have been looking at different kinds of feathers and talking about what makes an owl "a bird".

SPELLING TESTS
We had our first official spelling test last Friday.  The whole class did really well.  Don't forget to do a few practice tests at home so they are prepared.

WISE (Woman in Science and Engineering)
Some students from the University of Manitoba came out to our school on Monday to do some workshops on coding with our students.  We worked on playing some coding games on a big mat and them got to work with a robot-mouse and program it to move through a maze that we designed.  It was very exciting and lots of fun!
