FEELY BOOK ITEMS
I sent home a letter on Friday explaining what we need to make our FEELY BOOKS.  Please help your child find 6 “textures” around your home and bring them to school in a Ziplock bag labeled with their name.  They need something hard, soft, smooth, bumpy, crunchy and rough.  Some suggestions for each texture are listed in the letter.  Please send these items to school as soon as possible.  Thank you for your help.

SWEATERS WANTED
CLWR (Canadian Lutheran World Relief) is asking for used sweaters/sweatshirts, especially in children’s sizes.  If you are cleaning out your closets and drawers and have sweaters that your child no longer wears, please bring them to school this week.  They are sending off a shipment soon.  They will take adult sizes as well.

GRADE ONE HOMEWORK
The homework sheets and math game bags came in on Friday as requested – Yeah!  Please remember to leave the front coloured newsletter page attached to the front of the homework sheet as this makes it much easier for me to keep track of which week your child had a certain math game.  It is also helpful for me if the parents would initial the bottom of that same coloured newsletter sheet.  This lets me know that you saw the letter and the homework.

HOME-READING
We started our home-reading on Friday.  A letter explaining how the program works and some books were sent home.  Please let me know how things are going and contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

GRADE ONE HOMEWORK
This week I am sending home Math Game Bags for the grade one students as homework.  The students will be bringing home one Math Game Bag every Monday.  There is a game or activity to play together with an adult.  Each bag also has a math related book for you to read to your child (not for the child to read).  The newsletter will have a homework sheet attached, to complete at home along with the math game.  The children have all week to complete this homework game.  You can choose which night works best for your family.  You can play the game more than once if you have time.  The math bag game is due back at school on Fridays.  Please ensure that all of the parts to the game are in the bag so that it is ready for the next person.  The math homework sheet is also due on Friday.  Please keep the coloured newsletter sheet attached to the homework page as it makes it much easier for me to keep track of each week’s homework.

There is also a space at the bottom of each newsletter for the parents to initial and write a short note if needed.  Please let me know if you have any questions regarding the homework.

TERRY FOX WALK
This Friday our school will be going on a Terry Fox Walk around the neighbourhood in the afternoon.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!          Jace              September 17

SENSATIONAL SCIENCE
We have started our first science unit about Our Senses.  We went for a “Senses Walk” last week and we used our senses to explore the neighbourhood around the school.  We will be working on a variety of activities, such as – smelly jars, feely socks, shaker eggs, painting rainbows and having a taste test.

CLASSROOM HELPERS
We have a number of adult helpers in our classroom.  The first is a U of W student teacher named Lea Hosegood.  She will be in our classroom on Wednesdays and for various blocks of time throughout the school year.  The second is Mrs. Edwards.  She is an Educational Assistant in our classroom.  The third is Mrs. Woods.  She is a longtime volunteer to our school and will be here for Mondays and Fridays.  (P.S.  She is also my mom.)  We are very blessed to have so many enthusiastic and caring people in our class.

FROGGY BAGS
The students are doing a very good job at remembering their Froggy Bags every day.  The bags should hop back and forth from school to home each day and be brought into the classroom each morning.

PICTURE DAY
School pictures will be taken this Wednesday, September 18.  I promise not to do anything too messy that day - (gluing or painting).  You may want to send a comb or a brush in their backpacks.

WELCOME                                                                                                        Welcome to Grade One and Two!  Our first short week of school is complete and we are off to a great start!  This is the weekly class Newsletter.  They will be coming home each Monday (unless there is a holiday).  I will also be sending you a copy by e-mail as well as posting them on our class Blog.  We want to welcome Nathan to our class.  He is in grade 2 and has an older brother, Joel in grade 4.
Here are a couple of reminders –
1) The children are welcome to bring a water bottle to leave on their desks.  It does need a top that closes easily and I would like them to be taken home each Friday to be washed.                                                                                      2) The children need two pairs of shoes – one to be worn inside ONLY (gym shoes) and one pair to wear outside for recess.  Even though it is dry outside, their outside shoes are still tracking in dust and grass.                                        3) If you would like your child to have a canteen card, please send $10 to school.  You can put restrictions on the card if you wish. (ie- milk only)

SUMMER MEMORY BAGS                                                                                 Your child should have brought home a large envelope on Friday with a letter explaining what is needed for their “Summer Memory Bag”.  Please place a few memory items from the summer into their bag and send it back to school sometime this week.  We will be sharing a few each day.
