Learning's Fun ~ In Grade One! December 5, 2016

Reminders - Scholastic Book orders due by Friday, December 9
                   - Christmas Concert on Thursday Evening, December 15
                   - Christmas Cheer Board Hamper food in by Friday, December 16

CHRISTMAS CHEER BOARD
Each year our school makes up Hampers for the Christmas Cheer Board and delivers them to families in need.  Each classroom is asked to make up one hamper for one family.  Your child should have brought home a green slip of paper with a few food items listed.  Please bring in those food items to class by next Friday, December 16.  (If you are unable to bring in the food items listed, please let me know and I will make sure that they come to school.)

We are waiting for the exact names and ages of the children in our hamper family and I will let you know those as soon as possible.  If you are interested in buying a Christmas GIFT for one of the children in our family, please let me know.  We are also looking for a school family who is willing to DELIVER the hamper during the weekend of Dec. 17 - 18 (approx.).  Please let me know if your family is interested in helping out with this activity.  Thank you for your help.

RECYCLED BAGS
Our school collected many plastic grocery bags to be recycled.  Some of the schools that participated in this project were given a prize of a bench made of recycled bags and we were one of those schools!  Last week two representatives (one wearing a coat made from plastic bags) from the organization came out to our school to present us with our bench and a flower box.

Learning's Fun ~ In Grade One! November 27, 2016

Reminders - NO SCHOOL on Friday, December 2
                   - School Christmas Concert on Thursday, December 15

We have had a very busy few weeks here in grade one.  Thank you parents for coming out to the Student-Led Conferences last week.  The children were all so excited to share some of their work and their Portfolio Binders with you.

SOCIAL STUDIES
We have finished up our science unit about the Senses and have started our new social studies unit called "Our Community".

SNOW WEATHER
Please send lots of outdoor clothing with your child everyday.  We will go outside for recess as much as possible (unless the temperature, including the wind chill, is minus 30 degrees).  You might also like to send along an extra pair or socks or two and a spare pair of mittens.

HOME-READING LOGS
Thank you for filling out the Home-Reading Logs each week.  The most important part to remember to fill in is the "level" section.  These A, B, C, ... indicators help your child and me to choose the "good-fit" books for them to read.  They also help me track how your child is progressing in between the times that I am able to read with them individually here at school, and whether they should stay where they are or move up a level.  Writing in notes like (too hard, just right, easy) are also very helpful to me.

This is a photo taken with our coffee filter poppies that we made for the Remembrance Day Service.

Keep-up with the Home-Reading as usual.

FALL SUPPER
Thank you to all of the families who attended and helped out with our Fall Supper and Auction.  It was a lot of fun and the meal was delicious. I had MANY compliments about the paintings of "Ornamental Corn" that our class made for decorating the hall.
