What's New in One and Two? March 14 - 18, 2016

*Reminders - Student-Led Conferences on Tuesday and Wednesday (March 15 & 16)

LEPRECHAUN TRAPS
We will be building Leprechaun Traps on Wednesday, the day before St. Patrick's Day.  Please send in any re-cycling materials to school on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday.  We have not caught a leprechaun yet (they are very tricky), but each year the traps have been very creative and elaborate.

COUNTRY WEEK
Next week we will be studying the country of Portugal for four days.  During the afternoon classes, the students will be travelling from classroom to classroom experiencing a variety of activities all about Portugal.  We will be looking at the history, geography, dance, sports, art, food and folklore.  If any parents have Portuguese artifacts or cultural activities to share, please let us know.  We would love to hear from you!

Here are some photos of the children with their own owl paintings.

(Sorry Xander, I don't know why you are sideways.)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!                          Hayden                              March 9

OWL RESEARCH
The students have finished presenting their Owl Research Projects.  Each student studied one North American owl species so we learned something about 15 different kinds of owls.
Our Owl Habitat mural is now complete with the owl inhabitants.  If you have not stopped by the hallway bulletin board, please make sure you take a look.  It is amazing!
Here are some photos of the work in progress -

Here is the finished mural with the (life-sized) owls in their natural habitat locations.

OWL PELLETS
Last week we did a virtual owl pellet dissection in the computer lab.  If the children would like to try it again at home they can find it at (kidwings.com).
Then we dissected real owl pellets.  I ordered them from B.C. and they came in the mail.
An owl pellet is not "poop".  Owls do not have teeth so they often swallow their prey whole and whatever is not digested, gets coughed back up as a pellet (kind of like a cat hairball).  We found fur and bones in our owl pellets.  The children were very excited to be scientists and compare what they found inside the pellets with our animal bone chart.

WEARING VALENTINE COLOURS

FESTIVAL du VOYAGER
We had lots of fun dressing up as Voyagers last Wednesday.  We sang a Voyager song and danced the jig!  We were also able to taste some French Canadian pea soup, bannock, and maple syrup.  (Thank you to Mr. B, Mme Christensen and our class parent bakers)

LAST DRESS-UP DAY FOR "I LOVE TO READ" MONTH
For the final dress-up day this month, the students are invited to dress-up as a storybook character.  It does not need to be an elaborate or fancy costume.  They can just choose a character and create a costume at home.  If they are able, please have them bring the book with them to school that day.  The teachers have a surprise storybook skit to act out after chapel on Wednesday called "The Day the Crayons Came Home".

40 ACTS FOR LENT
During this season of Lent, our school has challenged ourselves to perform 40 acts of generosity.  There is a large, white tree in the front hallway and each class has been posting their acts on the tree.   Some are simple and some are more complicated, some are done by a group and some by individuals, some involve planning and some are spontaneous.  They are all welcome and encouraged and we pray that this idea nourishes "servant hearts" in our students and in our school every day.

OWL VISITORS
Our class was very excited to meet our two owl visitors from the Wildlife Haven last week.  We met Luna, the barn owl and Max, the great horned owl.  The children remembered so many facts about owls and the presenter was very impressed with their knowledge.
